Hello Steve, good to see you back! A trip to France?
I could have written the greatest part of your post, starting from Linda's "Heart like a wheel" which was the the first solo album I bought by a female singer. I wrote a post about it on my blog last year.
Concerning the McGarrigles, of course, the connexion with Loudon Wainwright III (and later with Martha & Rufus) was important too. Strangely, I only have two albums by the sisters: "Love Over And Over" and "The McGarrigle Hour".
But their importance must not be underestimated...
All the best,
Pascal
PS: Great albums from the DejaDisc label. Thank you for everything...

Herve:

I've long been a fan of Larry Hosford based soley on the "Crosswords" album. It's just great. I never got around to picking up a copy of the "AKA Lorenzo" album on vinyl when it was around. Larry is selling both CDs on his site, but they are, as you note, "home made reissues," and I try to avoid those when I can. I'd rather rip the vinyl myself and save the money!

Hi Steve,

I must be one of the rare persons who has Larry "Lorenzo" Hosford's CDs on the side of the pond!

Can't believe this guy could hire the services of Leon Russell and George Harrison!

Looks like my copies of Crosswords and "aka Lorenzo" are home-made reissues.

Met him though Jack WIlliams' yahoo! list and I must have played some songs of his on my defunct Americana in Paris show. Seems like it was a looong time ago.

Hey, Hervé! Everything's fine, just got super busy for awhile there. I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things, though one a day is probably out of the question for awhile at least. Hopefully I can get two or three a week in for the time being.

A big giant influence and big giant album, of the first albums I know of with jamming recorded in the studio. Friends that would only listen to (during the disco years) the likes of Bachman Turner Overdrive, Black Sabbath, Queen, etc. I had them listen to and then they accepted others as Santana, Clapton, Hendrix, and Allman Brothers. I consider it a positive influence on their musical tastes.

And the hidden faces in the Santana album cover were counted, looking for a new high total.

About "Bridge over troubled water": I agree with you, and I thought exacltly the same yesterday morning while listening to Buck Owens cover of this song that predated Johnny's one.
Another song doesn't suffer cover: "A whiter shade of pale". But the Everly Brothers did it! Hard to listen to...

Yes, I sometimes also feel like I might be writing all this just for myself and that's a hurdle sometimes. But then someone like you will post a comment and I think, "Hey, someone really is reading this stuff!" and it gives me encouragement to continue on. And I know from talking to some of my friends that they read my posts even though they never write any comments. In the end, I guess I am writing for myself, but it is really nice to know that someone else is paying attention as well.

I have copies of both of Brockett's albums (thanks Herve). I didn't know him a few weeks ago.
I was sad when I learned Dan Fogelberg's untimely death. Captured Angel is one of my favorites too, with The innocent Age...
I know it's hard for the blog. Mine is in semi-sleep for a few months, though I'm not busy with work. Maybe I have too much to write and don't know where to begin. Maybe I feel I'm writing just for myself and miss the exchanges I once had...

Pascal: Jackson and Dan are among my very favorites as well. Maybe I'll write about "Captured Angel" soon, my favorite Fogelberg album. But I still listen to lots of other singer/songwriters from those days as well. I just ordered the Jaime Brockett CD "Remember The Wind And The Rain" from Collectors Choice Music a few days ago (it was on sale). I also have an unopened vinyl copy of his album "North Mountain Velvet" that I've, of course, never listened to since it's unopened. Maybe I should! As for the blog, I got a bit worn out doing one posting every day (maybe too much for me) and I got busy with work so I took a little break, but I'm trying to catch back up now!

Hello Steve... I remember Boylan back in his Asylum years. I nearly bought an album ("Suzy"?) at the time but I didn't. I didn't really listen to him, too many singers looked the same. Only two have remained among my favorites (Jackson Browne & Dan Fogelberg). I forgot most of the others...
Best regards,
Pascal
PS: I had a phone call with Herve today, he asked me if you were back on the blog. I answered "no" and saw I was wrong ten minutes later. We talked about Michael Dinner, Jaime Brockett, Steve Noonan...

I have stories to go with all of my favorite albums too, and I used to like to spend alot of time browsing in record stores and reading liner notes and music magazines. In December of '77 I bought My Aim is True on the strength of a rave review in Rolling Stone and I was blown away; it was unlike anything I had ever heard before. In the summer of '78 I went to a record collectors convention and there was only one guy at the convention who had any Elvis records. I talked with him for a while and bought a couple of Elvis singles with B-sides that he recommended. He told me his name was Steve and that he was the manager of a record store in town and gave me his number in case I ever wanted to buy any more records. A couple of months later I called him and asked for a job at the record store. I started on Halloween night 1978 at Disc Records in the Galleria in Houston, TX. Steve turned me on to Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, Dave Edmunds, and all the good stuff. The rest as they say, is history.
Thanks, Steve!

Pascal, I have "Honky Tonk Heaven" on vinyl as well! In fact, I still have two mint copies of it. Mine are both from Holland. It's technically an A&M release with the A&M logos and catalog numbers, but it also lists Ariola-Eurodisc Benelux B.V. And you're right, it's a great album with a few tracks that I don't think you can find anywhere else. I also have another 2 disc collection on A&M from Germany called Pop Chronik (there was a whole series of the Pop Chronik releases from different artists like The Kinks, Status Quo, Spooky Tooth, etc.). It also has a nice booklet inside (in both German and English). It's a real mixture of stuff, some songs from the four official albums, plus some other stuff, some of which is on "Honky Tonk Heaven" but some of which is not: "Money Honey," "Wake Up Little Susie," "Roll Over Beethoven"). You've inspired me to go back through all these and find out just what songs are duplicated where and if they've all been released on CD yet.

And you’re right, it’s a great album with a few tracks that I don’t think you can find anywhere else. I also have another 2 disc collection on A&M from Germany called Pop Chronik (there was a whole series of the Pop Chronik releases from different artists like The Kinks, Status Quo, Spooky Tooth, etc.). It also has a nice booklet inside (in both German and English). It’s a real mixture of stuff, some songs from the four official albums, plus some other stuff, some of which is on “Honky Tonk Heaven” but some of which is not: “Money Honey,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Roll Over Beethoven”). You’ve inspired me to go back through all these and find out just what songs are duplicated where and if they’ve all been released on CD yet.

"I’m not your typical record buyer. I never have been. I’ve long maintained that most people do not buy records based on things like liner notes, album credits or record reviews in newspapers and magazines. But I certainly do. When I see an album by an artist that I’m not familiar with I always look to see who’s playing on it. If there are people I know I’m more likely to check it out. I’ve bought tons of albums based on a review I read somewhere. I have my favorite music writers and I know their tastes so I can often tell what the chances are I’ll like something based on who reviewed it and what they thought of it."
That's what you write, that what I do! There was a gap between the vinyl days and the internet (10 years, for me). But in 1998, when I first went on the web, it was mostly to buy records through CDnow, who gave plenty of informations abouts the artists and the discs.
Now I can find nearly everything and so I can buy a CD (or download it) by someone I never heard before (and never even read about) and be sure to love it. That's what I did in the 70's & 80's (before the CDs) with people like John Prine, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, and many more. That's what I do now through the links on internet.
Great to read about "Common Sense". I guess I won't listen to it the same way next time!

I'm another big fan of the FBB, of Gram Parsons and of Chris Hillman, one of the greatests for me. I'm found of this album, too.
There's another album called "Honky Tonk Heaven", published by Ariola Benelux and later (1974) by Ariola France that was for me a true gem. A double vinyl with 24 unreleased (at the time) tracks recorded in 1970/1971. The country album that never was released (14 tracks sung by GP), a few with Rick Roberts, an intrumental by Sneaky Pete and even "Here Tonight" by Gene Clark with the Burritos (also released on "Roadmaster).
Some of the tracks by Gram were released in 1976 on "Sleepless Nights", but the ones sung by Brnie, Chris and Rick have been forgotten.

Thanks, Pascal, it's good to know that you can buy downloads of Talley's albums on his website. I have them all on CD, but some others might want to download them, especially since a few are hard to find on CD.

I downloaded & listened to this this album yesterday before Herve told me about your blog. Isn't it strange?
All Talley's albums are available for download on his website http://www.jamestalley.com/ (MP3 or FLAC) with the booklet and/or cover art in .pdf format.

I have this one, too. Eric & Craig had been half of Amrican Flyer (with Steve Katz - ex Blood Sweat & Tears - and Doug Yule - ex Velvet Underground) for 2 albums released in 1976 & 1977.
I also have a solo album by Eric Justin Kaz "If You're Lonely" (1972).
Craig Fuller would be later a member of Little Feat.

Pascal, I have the Japanese import of the second Warner album, "Blue Ridge Mountain Skyline" but I've never been able to find the first one. It's pretty hard to come by these days.
